John is a co-founder of SQM and serves as the Firm’s Managing Partner and Portfolio Manager for the SQM Frontier Africa Fund. He has more than 25 years of experience investing in frontier Africa, the Middle East and Asia. John launched and managed The Africa Emerging Markets Fund (Nov 1993-March 2009) and The Emerging Markets Middle East Fund (Dec 2004-March 2009) and co-managed the EFG-Hermes Middle East and Developing Africa Fund while a portfolio manager at Emerging Markets Management LLC (EMM). Prior to EMM, John served as an equity analyst in Southeast Asia for Crosby Securities and as an independent consultant covering frontier markets. John has a B.A. in economics from Davidson College and an M.B.A. from the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina/Chapel Hill.
Sharif Atta, CFA
Partner and Portfolio Manager for the SQM Frontier Middle East Fund
Sharif is a co-founder of SQM and serves as the Portfolio Manager for the SQM Middle East Fund. He has more than 15 years’ experience in frontier and emerging markets. Sharif most recently served as a Senior Analyst at Soros Fund Management LLC (SFM) where he covered Africa, the Middle East and several other emerging markets. Prior to SFM, Sharif was an Analyst following frontier Africa and the Middle East at Emerging Markets Management L.L.C. and also served as an Investment Analyst with EFG-Hermes in Cairo, Egypt. Sharif has a B.S. in Finance from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Donald Savage, CPA
Partner, Chief Compliance Office and Treasurer
Don is a co-founder of SQM and has more than 25 years of experience in accounting, finance, and business administration including 21 years as the key financial officer of operating entities (11 of which were for 3 hedge funds) and six years in public accounting. Don spent 11 years as a co-founder of two, and CFO of three Hedge Fund companies: Ninth Wave Capital, Sivik Global Healthcare and K Capital. Two of these firms grew assets to more than $1 billion. At SQM, he is responsible for structuring and running all the back-office, administrative, financial and tax functions for the firm, its funds and any other related companies or partnerships. Don has a B.S. from Babson College with majors in finance and economics as well as an MS in Accountancy from Bentley College.
Partner and Chief Financial Officer
Henry joined SQM in September 2013. He has over ten years of industry experience, serving in various back office roles. Prior to joining SQM, Henry was a Senior Portfolio Accountant and more recently, a Senior Pricing & Data Management Performance Analyst with Emerging Markets Management L.L.C (EMM). Prior to EMM, he was an International Investment Performance Associate with Cambridge Associates. Henry has a B.S. in Business Administration from American University.
Tristan Clube, PhD
Consultant for the SQM Middle East Fund
Tristan has more than 30 years of emerging markets experience including more than 20 in the Middle East. He has managed or advised several Middle East Funds including the Emerging Markets Middle East Fund with Emerging Markets Management L.L.C. and the EFG-Hermes Middle East and Developing Africa Fund. He has also assisted with funds for countries including Egypt, Qatar, Oman, Pakistan, Iran and India. Prior to setting up a dedicated investment consultancy, Tethys Advisors, in 2004, Tristan was the Head of Regional Asset Management at EFG-Hermes. He began his emerging markets career at Martin Currie Investment Management where he latterly headed up the Emerging Markets Department. Tristan has an MA in Earth Sciences from Oxford University and a PhD in Geophysics from Edinburgh University. Tristan’s involvement with SQM is through a consulting agreement between his consultancy, Tethys Advisors Limited, and SQM Frontier Management. Through this arrangement, he provides non-discretionary investment advice on companies and markets in the Middle East, North Africa and other frontier countries to SQM Frontier Management.
